OK, I will admit it...when I first got this camera in the mail (I ordered a like-new used model here on Amazon), I was horrified. The camera is small and incredibly light weight. I thought I had foreign made plastic junk in my hands. So, if you are buying this camera to look impressive to someone else, well, you might consider another item. :) Ha! My mind quickly changed.

I put this camera through some tests by taking it on a field trip to the Chicago area museums with my students. I could easily carry it and easily stuff it in my pants pocket when not using it. (yes, it is that small). At first, I thought the camera would easily break, but it seems to be fairly sturdy (I didn't use any case with it).

A few caveats would be helpful.

First, it comes with an 8 Gbyte card, but you really want to get a 32-64 Gbyte card.

Also, the included battery is fine, but if you are doing a lot of field work then you will want to buy an extended life battery or two for your work.

Also, you do want to use the included software to download the compressed video.

Once you have the video in standard form, you will be able to use any of the commonly available post-production software to edit and enhance the video. I use Sony Vegas and Pinnacle Studio for most of my work.

All in all, it is a very cost effective product.

My first experience with JVC was with the GS-TD1 3d camcorder. It performed to my expectations and more. After about a year and countless hours of shooting i decided to upgrade to another camera/camcorder. My original choice was Canons XA10 but that was well out of my budget then i stumbled accidentally onto this intimidating piece. At first i did not really think of getting it but then after much research, i finally gave in and bought it. If you have purchased other cameras / camcorders from JVC just know that this beauty has all the familiar menus and buttons all strategically located/placed for the user shooter. At first glance it has a very intimidating appearance and the size (see specifications) is just perfect for on the go shots. Absolutely do not let its small size fool you! this little monster is just a joy to operate with its quick and easy settings menu. No bells and whistles no hoopla and other fancy gadgetry to get in the way ( my Nikon D7000 is a lot more complicated)! All in all i would say that if you are looking for a no nonsense camera that is durable , uncomplicated , with beautiful shots /end results be it in 600 fps or 120 fps then this camera is for you. like i said even though its a cute smallish camera it rocks compared to those other bulky ones (who said that a video camera had to be of large broadcast style type should be shot)! I shoot video and stills overseas and on ships where the action is intense and fast, take my word ... i absolutely love this camera..ordering a second soon. Add a steady shot shoulder stock mount with pistol grip and watch the heads turn from the cameras appearance and of course it end product. I should also mention that Beach Camera and Amazon did an amazing job of shipping it out to me even though i am halfway around the world. Wonderful job! Thank You for supporting us Veterans!

This is a good little camera for the price. The picture quality is a little lacking compared to some of the more higher priced cameras, but with that said it is worth the cost. I have had this unit for about 2 months and I am happy with the camera. Great cheap camera to take on hiking or camping trips where you might worry about damaging a more exspensive camera. Good camera also for someone who may want a camera around for just occasional and dosen't want to tie up a alot in something that get's used 3 times a year.

If you want a weather proof camcorder this is it. The video quality is great. Just remember you have to record in the uxp setting without the face detection using a SDXC card for the best quality. The view finder doesn't show the true capture quality. Before you start you have to go to the menu and set it up. JVC states you can't use uxp setting and put the video on DVD they are wrong. If you have the Pinnacle Studio HD14 editing program you can capture the video from the card on your computer, then edit it and burn to any format you want be it Bluray, DVD or many other formats available . It takes time but it is well worth it. Once the card is recognized open the files until you find stream then the program will recognize all the scenes you have taken, then capture them. JVC along with other camcorder manufacturers need to expand their manuals so the user can take advantage of these great camcorders. Why anyone would want to use the inferior shooting modes or cards is ridiculous. Minus one star for bad user manual and inferior viewfinder screen. Also if and when the price goes down on the JVC GZ-R 10 I will buy another one. Just found out it takes a 128GB SDXC card which gives you 11 hours of video recording at the best quality. I wanted to upload a test video but for some reason this web site even though it says you can I can't get it to work with any of the formats they list. Some reviewer claimed their Canon was better,I have owned four different Canon's and none match the JVC.
. I also own the JVC GZ-E300 Refurbished for $140. and it is great but not weather proof. And no I don't work for JVC or any company that gets paid to review camcorders,,,, I am retired and they can't buy me.

After testing this camera on several shoots as part of a class assignment, I was pleased with the quality of image it produced. The battery life is acceptable, and the camera has room for two batteries, making it even more reliable. The menu and interface is nearly identical to the JVC Everio line. The most noticeable differences between this model and the JVC Everio is the build (being shoulder-mounted), the added focus ring (which still feels like a simulated rather than mechanical function), the buttons on the body of the camera allowing for adjustments to the picture (iris, white balance, gain, shutter, all being adjustments with a simulated feel), the eyepiece, and the different recording formats (including 60p). White balancing is easy; other controls are not so naturally adjusted, such as iris and shutter speed. There are definite sacrifices made in terms of usability and functionality, but I feel that it is still worth the ~$1,599 price tag.
